Top NATO members in Europe have pledged to take greater responsibility for the continent’s security, reaffirming their alliance with the United States as an “indispensable ally,” according to a statement released by the organization. The declaration came after defense ministers from France, Germany, Italy, Poland, and Britain met in Paris, emphasizing the need for Europe to assume more responsibility for its own security.
European Commitment to NATO
The joint statement highlighted a shared vision for the future of NATO from a European perspective, responding to former President Donald Trump’s calls for increased defense spending and shared responsibility. The ministers stressed the importance of continued U.S. engagement in European security, calling it essential to a strong and credible NATO.
France’s defense minister, Catherine Vautrin, revealed that the key five countries will work together to build “a stronger Europe within an equally stronger NATO” through a coordinated plan developed in full transparency with Washington. European foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas also participated in the meeting, stating the need to modernize European forces to build a stronger NATO.
U.S. Troop Withdrawal and Trump’s Comments
The NATO affirmation follows the United States’ announcement in April of plans to withdraw around 5,000 troops from Germany, which accounts for about 15 percent of the 36,000 stationed there. The Pentagon stated this withdrawal would occur over the next six to 12 months. This move came just weeks after Trump had criticized the alliance, calling it a “paper tiger” and asserting that Putin knew this as well.
The U.S. remains the largest military spender in NATO, accounting for over $1 trillion of the alliance’s combined $1.8 trillion in defense spending. The other 31 member states spent approximately $777 billion, underscoring the U.S. military’s pivotal role in NATO.
