During an interview on CNN’s State of the Union, Attorney General Todd Blanche faced off against Dana Bash over the Justice Department’s lawsuit involving Alaska’s Senate race. The lawsuit centers on a political newcomer, Daniel J. Sullivan, who is accused of running a campaign designed to confuse voters and act as a spoiler for incumbent Senator Dan Sullivan.

Bash attempted to frame the DOJ’s actions as an unconstitutional overreach, citing Article I, Section 4 of the U.S. Constitution. She argued that the provision states that the times, places, and manner of holding elections for senators and representatives are prescribed in each state. However, Blanche quickly corrected her by highlighting the following clause, which grants Congress the power to make or alter regulations regarding elections.

Blanche’s Constitutional Correction

Blanche pointed out that Bash’s selective quoting of the Constitution was misleading. He reminded her that the full text of Article I, Section 4 includes the clause allowing Congress to pass laws regulating elections. This law, he explained, is what the DOJ is relying on to file its lawsuit against the fake Sullivan.

Bash tried to recover by referring to the law as the ‘so-called motor voter law,’ but Blanche immediately refuted that, stating the law has a different name and is a critical tool for enforcing election integrity. He emphasized that the DOJ is responsible for enforcing laws passed by Congress, including those that protect constitutional and statutory rights during the election process.

Alaska’s Election Controversy

The case has significant implications for the outcome of the Senate race, which is considered a close contest. Alaska’s election director initially deemed Sullivan ineligible, but a Superior Court judge restored him to the ballot. Both candidates have advanced to the November election, with early voting already underway.

Blanche stressed that the confusion caused by the fake Sullivan could impact the election results, as Alaskans are already casting early ballots. The DOJ’s lawsuit aims to ensure that voters are not misled and that their votes are accurately counted.
