Tom Brady, the legendary quarterback and Fox Sports analyst, took to the airwaves to voice his frustration with the officiating in the Lions-Packers game, calling some calls ‘fraudulent.’ The game, which saw a string of controversial roughing-the-passer penalties, left fans and analysts alike questioning the decisions made by the referees.

Brady’s Outspoken Criticism

Brady was particularly vocal about a call involving Lions quarterback Jared Goff and Packers defensive lineman Karl Brooks. Goff completed an 18-yard pass to Sam LaPorta, and just moments later, Brooks made contact with Goff. Despite no helmet-to-helmet contact and Brooks not using his body weight to drive Goff, the referees flagged Brooks for roughing the passer, adding 15 yards to the Lions’ drive.

“No, my goodness, what is that? There’s no way,” Brady said. “Brooks on the tackle kind of makes a great play. It’s a bang-bang play. He rolls off his body. It’s a great throw by Goff. That’s definitely not roughing the passer.”

Analyst Support for Brady’s Viewpoint

Dean Blandino, a former NFL head of officials and current Fox Sports rules analyst, echoed Brady’s sentiments. Blandino noted that Brooks’ tackle was not late and that Goff’s head was up, making the call a textbook example of legal tackling.

“It wasn’t late. His head is up. That’s teach tape tackling. That’s not roughing the passer,” Blandino said.

Impact of the Penalties

Though the penalties didn’t result in points, they significantly impacted the game’s flow. The added yards turned a fourth-down punting situation into 1st & 10, allowing the Lions to extend their drive and eventually stall at the Green Bay six. The penalties also consumed extra time, altering field position and potentially affecting the game’s outcome.

Brady’s Influence in the NFL

Brady’s critique carries significant weight, given his status as one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history and his role as a Fox Sports color analyst. His comments are expected to be heard and considered by NFL officials, especially as the league continues to face scrutiny over officiating decisions.
