Violent crime and theft have seen dramatic declines during President Donald Trump’s first year in office, according to an annual crime survey released by the Justice Department. The National Crime Victimization Survey, conducted by the Census Bureau and analyzed by the Justice Department, reported a significant drop in violent crime victimizations in 2025 compared to 2024.

Crime Declines Match Federal Findings

The survey found that overall violent crime victimization, including rape, robbery, and aggravated assault, fell by 25% in 2025, with 669,000 fewer violent crimes reported than in 2024. In 2024, 8.2 million violent crime victimizations were reported, compared to 7.5 million in 2025. The declines across various categories—aggravated assault, robbery, property crime, burglary, and motor vehicle theft—were the largest one-year drops in the history of the survey, which began in 1973.

Memphis and D.C. Show Remarkable Success

Trump’s aggressive approach to crime has yielded notable results in cities like Memphis, Tennessee, and Washington, D.C. In Memphis, a year after federal law enforcement was deployed, murders fell by 37%, sexual assaults by 30%, robberies by 47%, and aggravated assaults by 29%. The Memphis federal task force made 13,000 arrests and seized over 2,200 illegal firearms, with strong cooperation from state officials and the Tennessee National Guard.

In Washington, D.C., the federal task force also saw success, making 6,000 arrests, including 35 murder suspects and 100 gang members. The task force also recovered 25 missing children and over 2,000 illegal firearms. These results reflect the broader trend of declining violent crime across the nation, with the FBI estimating that the murder rate reached 4.1 per 100,000 people, the lowest in over half a century.

Commitment to Safety and Law Enforcement

Associate Attorney General Stanley Woodward emphasized the success of Trump’s ‘Make America Safe Again’ agenda, stating that the safety of law-abiding Americans remains a top priority. The Justice Department’s findings align with the FBI’s data, reinforcing the effectiveness of the administration’s crime-fighting efforts.
