Aaron Rodgers, quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers, has publicly criticized the National Football League for its decision to expand the regular season to 17 games in an 18-week span, calling it a cash-grab that compromises player safety and health.
17-Game Schedule Sparks Concerns
Following the Steelers’ 16-10 victory over the New Orleans Saints in Paris, France, Rodgers expressed his frustrations with the NFL’s new schedule. He argued that the decision was driven more by the league’s financial interests than by the well-being of the athletes.
“I think it would have been phenomenal for the game,” Rodgers said, according to the New York Post. “Now the owners wanted to push for 17 games for the extra revenue and because they care so much about player safety.”
Proposals for Player Safety and Global Expansion
Rodgers also suggested that providing players with an additional bye week could help improve their health and safety. Additionally, he voiced support for expanding American football internationally, calling for a dedicated international week.
“It would be awesome to see them have international week,” Rodgers insisted. “I think it would be great for the game and expansion of the game. I wish there was a mandate though from the league — and they would have to open up their pocket books too which, I don’t know, maybe they are a little tight on money — I think they should mandate every team coming Sunday or Monday. To really enjoy the culture and the place you are going. You can do events in those cities and outreach stuff and community stuff. But they won’t because they are tight [on money].”
Paris Game Faces Safety Concerns
The game in Paris, which took place amid ongoing unrest and riots in the City of Lights, raised additional concerns about player safety. The Steelers even canceled a public event they had planned before the game due to the heightened risk.
While the NFL has continued to promote international expansion, Rodgers’ comments highlight the growing debate over the balance between financial gain and athlete welfare in the sport.
