A 24-year-old U.S. Coast Guard rescue swimmer, Josh Law, recounted rescuing 16 people from the Pacific Ocean in the early hours of October 16, in one of the most challenging operations he has ever faced. The incident occurred about 140 miles off the coast of Mexico, near Ensenada, where migrant smuggling boats often travel. Federal authorities are now investigating the event, and Mexican officials confirmed that the individuals rescued were Mexican.

Operation in the Dark

When crews at the USCG Air Station in Ventura, California, were alerted to the sinking boat, Law and helicopter pilot Lt. Miyako Miller were among the first responders. Miller navigated the helicopter using the stars as there was no moonlight, while Law prepared for the rescue in the pitch-black conditions.

Law, wearing a dry suit that began filling with water, swam to each individual and brought them into the rescue basket. Despite the cold and the difficult conditions, he remained focused on saving lives. When the helicopter was full, the crew took off for San Diego to hand over the survivors to waiting ambulances.

Shark Injuries and Missing Individuals

During the flight, Law noted that he treated three individuals whose injuries appeared to be due to shark bites. He described the scene as chaotic, with people in the water panicking as massive waves crashed around them. “I had to get them to the basket in any way I could,” he recalled.

Eleven other people at the scene were never found, according to CBS 8. Customs and Border Protection officers later processed the survivors according to immigration laws after they were medically cleared. Nearly half of those rescued have since been returned to Mexico, U.S. officials stated.

Coast Guard’s Rescue Mission

Law’s name is listed on the Coast Guard Aviation Association website under the rescue swimmer roster. The U.S. Coast Guard describes Aviation Survival Technicians (ASTs) as specialized rescue swimmers with the training and experience needed to operate in challenging environments. ASTs are typically assigned to Coast Guard air stations and must maintain the highest level of physical fitness.
