Federal prosecutors have alleged that 405 individuals who are not U.S. citizens voted in Washington state elections, casting over 1,500 ballots across multiple elections. Acting U.S. Attorney Neil Floyd stated that investigators have confirmed these findings with high confidence, noting that the number of noncitizens voting in the state could be significantly higher.
Vote Fraud Allegations and Legal Action
Floyd emphasized that the identified 405 individuals, many of whom voted multiple times, have cast over 1,500 ballots illegally. He described the situation as ‘the tip of the iceberg,’ suggesting the actual number of noncitizens voting in the state could be in the thousands. However, Floyd did not provide a statewide count to support this estimate.
Investigation Process and Challenges
Floyd explained that investigators compared publicly available Washington voter lists with federal records to identify potential noncitizens. The process required multiple checks to ensure the records referred to the same person, making the work time-consuming. Washington has declined to provide the federal government with its full voter registration database, including personal identifying information, which has hindered the investigation.
Legal and Election Context
Floyd stated that his office would pursue criminal cases against individuals who vote illegally and those who knowingly assist them. The investigation comes ahead of the November 3 midterm elections. Last week, it was reported that Los Angeles County officials could not independently verify voters’ citizenship beyond what voters stated on their registration forms.
Legal Disputes Over Voter Verification
The Justice Department sued California to stop the state from counting mailed ballots from more than 20,000 registered voters identified as likely noncitizens until their citizenship could be verified. California officials challenged the evidence behind the list, highlighting ongoing legal disputes over voter verification processes.
