Countries across Europe have begun distributing emergency preparedness plans to their citizens, urging them to stockpile essential supplies such as food, medicine, and water. England, Germany, and Sweden have all issued guidance advising their populations to prepare for a range of potential crises, including war, cyberattacks, extreme weather, and disease.

Stockpiling Advice Across Europe

The British government’s Be Ready campaign highlights the importance of being prepared for emergencies, stating that being ready for three days can help individuals manage while support reaches those in need. The campaign provides a checklist of essential items, including drinking water, nonperishable foods, essential medicine, a first-aid kit, a torch, a battery or wind-up radio, a charged power bank, and cash.

Germany’s Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Homeland Security warns that peacetime crises such as animal diseases or accidents in large-scale technical installations can lead to food shortages and supply bottlenecks. The ministry advises citizens to stockpile enough emergency supplies to last ten days, including two liters of liquid per person per day.

Sweden directly warns its citizens of the risk of conflict on its soil, with the Swedish Civil Defence and Resilience Agency stating that the security situation is the most serious since the Second World War. The agency urges Swedes to be prepared, noting that most people have an obligation to help in the event of war or a threat of war.

The news comes as the U.S. Department of War has enacted the Fortress America program, which aims to make military installations self-reliant for 90 days. This initiative aligns with the growing emphasis on national preparedness across Europe and the United States.
