Over 175 House Democrats have demanded the Department of Justice drop its criminal investigation of Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar, calling the pre-dawn raid on her home a ‘weaponization of law enforcement.’ The letter, dated October 26 and led by Reps. Pramila Jayapal, Jamie Raskin, Bennie Thompson, Robert Garcia, Yvette Clarke, and Greg Casar, describes the search as an unprecedented act of political harassment.
‘This weaponization of law enforcement to harass a sitting Member of Congress 22 days before an election is unprecedented and unacceptable,’ the members wrote. ‘We stand with Congresswoman Omar and condemn the weaponization of law enforcement against her. You have already disgraced the offices you hold, and we demand you to refrain from taking any further actions that could affect the outcome of the upcoming election.’
The letter was sent to Attorney General Todd Blanche and DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin, asserting that the probe centers on immigration paperwork filed by Omar’s late father when she was supposedly a minor, after the family fled Somalia’s civil war. Agents are investigating whether Omar or her father, Nur Omar Mohamed, intentionally lied about her birth date on paperwork so she could gain citizenship through him as a minor when he was naturalized in 2000, despite being a legal adult.
Investigators are also scrutinizing her father’s past military service in Somalia and whether relevant information was omitted. The members argue that questions about decades-old documents do not justify seizing her phone, passport, and other items from her residence, and they contend the action violates longstanding Justice Department norms against overt investigative steps involving candidates so close to an election.
They demand that officials ‘refrain from taking further actions’ that could influence the race in Minnesota’s 5th District and declare that ‘political attacks should play no role in federal law enforcement.’ Omar has described the search as an attempt to ‘target political enemies’ and ‘weaponize federal law enforcement,’ stating she will not be silenced.
🚨 ILHAN OMAR RESPONDS TO FBI RAID
In interviews, she recounted agents arriving around 6 a.m., conducting an hours-long search while her husband and son were present, and seizing multiple phones, notebooks, and other items. Omar has claimed that the publicity has made it unsafe for her family to remain in the home due to death threats.
Former President Barack Obama called the investigation ‘appalling,’ and House Democratic leaders, including Hakeem Jeffries, issued a joint statement labeling it a ‘rogue abuse of power.’
It is a basic principle of American democracy that the government can’t selectively target individuals simply because of their political beliefs or what they say. But that’s exactly what the Trump Administration is doing to Congresswoman Ilhan Omar of Minnesota.
As of the letter’s release, Omar has not yet been charged with a crime.
