A complex immigration fraud scheme involved foreign scammers staging hundreds of robberies across the U.S. to secure U-Visas for thousands of individuals. The scheme, which spanned multiple states and locations, saw perpetrators fabricate criminal incidents to qualify victims for special visas designed to aid law enforcement.

Staged Crimes and Legal Consequences

The conspiracy included fake robberies at fast food restaurants and gas stations, with participants posing as victims to apply for U-Visas. These visas are intended for foreign nationals who are victims of certain crimes and assist in investigations. One of the staged robberies turned violent when a convenience store worker was shot, though the victim survived.

Parth Nayi, a 29-year-old resident of Woodridge, Illinois, was sentenced to two years in prison and ordered to pay a $50,000 fine after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit visa fraud. He was part of a larger plot involving Kewon Young, who also pleaded guilty to similar charges. Both men organized individuals to participate in the staged robberies, including brandishing fake firearms and striking victims to make the incidents appear real.

Victims and Legal Proceedings

Among those who participated in the scheme were several individuals who later pled guilty to their roles, including Bhikhabhai Patel, Nilesh Patel, Ravinaben Patel, and Rajnikumar Patel. The scheme spanned from July 2022 to January 2024, with incidents occurring in locations such as Chicago, Louisiana, and Tennessee.

The Trump administration has been actively targeting visa fraud, with a focus on H-1B visa abuses, highlighting the broader context of immigration enforcement efforts. The scheme underscores the lengths to which some individuals will go to gain legal residency, even through criminal means.
