Maryland-born Michigan Sheriff Timothy Federspiel has left the Democratic Party after 18 years of service, citing concerns over the party’s approach to public safety. Federspiel, who has served as sheriff since 2009 and worked in law enforcement since 1987, announced his departure following his endorsement of Republican candidates for Senate and governor.

Lifelong Democrat Turns Against Party’s Crime Policies

Federspiel, who described himself as a lifelong Democrat and a “Kennedy Democrat” like his grandparents and parents, said he felt compelled to leave the party due to its shifting stance on criminal justice. In a recent Fox News interview, he stated, “18 years of being sheriff as a Democrat. Been a lifelong Democrat… I’m a Kennedy Democrat that my grandparents were. They wanted me to leave, and I obliged.”

Federspiel criticized the Democratic Party’s policies that prioritize early prisoner releases over victim safety and community protection. He argued that the party’s focus on leniency in sentencing has led to a lack of accountability for violent offenders. “We need to talk more about victims and keeping prisoners in prison,” he stated, expressing support for stricter sentencing laws for violent offenders.

Tragic Case of Karen King Sparks Concern

Federspiel referenced the 1997 kidnapping, rape, torture, and murder of 18-year-old Karen King in Saginaw County as a real-world example of the consequences of progressive sentencing reforms. King, a Michigan State University freshman, was abducted from a grocery store parking lot, and one of the killers was a juvenile at the time. Progressive juvenile sentencing changes have led to repeated court reviews for possible resentencing and release of the killers.

“A tragic, real-world example of this soft-on-crime approach is hitting close to home right now in Saginaw County,” Federspiel said. “The case of 18-year-old Karen King, who was brutally kidnapped, tortured, and murdered in 1997, remains a painful scar on our region. Yet, due to systemic shifts in juvenile sentencing advocacy championed by progressives, her killers have been repeatedly granted court reviews and Miller hearings to evaluate them for potential resentencing and eventual release. Our justice system must prioritize victims and community safety over the comfort of convicted murderers.”

Democratic Party Responds to Sheriff’s Exit

The Saginaw County Democratic Party welcomed Federspiel’s departure and stated it would run a “true Democrat” against him in 2028. Federspiel’s concerns highlight a growing divide within the party over criminal justice policies, particularly in the wake of high-profile cases like Karen King’s.
