Rogers Claims El-Sayed Lacks Democratic Support Ahead of Midterms
Michigan Senate race sees Rogers targeting El-Sayed’s dwindling Democratic coalition ahead of midterms.

Middle of the 2022 midterm election season, Michigan Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers is claiming that his Democratic opponent, Abdul El-Sayed, is losing key voting blocs. Rogers argued on NBC’s “Meet the Press” that several important Democratic groups are turning to his campaign instead of El-Sayed.
Targeting Key Democratic Voters
Rogers emphasized that the fastest-growing Democratic coalitions are now shifting their support. He specifically mentioned Jewish Democrats and African American voters in Detroit, Pontiac, and Flint, stating that they are refusing to back El-Sayed. Rogers also pointed to a former Michigan Democratic Party chairman, Lon Johnson, who publicly stated he cannot support El-Sayed, adding to the claims of his waning support.
El-Sayed’s Response and Campaign Efforts
El-Sayed is working to counter these claims by trying to win over voters who Rogers is targeting. Former President Barack Obama joined El-Sayed in Detroit, aiming to attract voters who are still loyal to Obama but are now questioning El-Sayed’s viability. Obama warned that El-Sayed’s opponents are using the same tactics he faced in the past, suggesting they aim to spread fear and division.
Appealing to Faith-Based Voters
In an effort to broaden his appeal, El-Sayed has tried to reach out to Christian voters, particularly men, by emphasizing his faith in a recent campaign video. He described himself as a man of faith, stating that he prays daily and believes in serving God and his neighbors. However, critics have raised concerns about his potential to influence policy through his religious beliefs, with some accusing him of seeking to shape federal appointments in a way that could lead to policies resembling Sharia law.
Close Race in Michigan
The race for Michigan’s next Senate seat is one of the nation’s most competitive, with polls showing El-Sayed maintaining a narrow lead over Rogers. As the midterms approach, both candidates are intensifying their efforts to sway key demographics and secure the support of crucial voter groups.
