A beloved football coach from Coraopolis, Pennsylvania, died during a high school football game on Friday after collapsing on the field. Ed Dawson, the head coach of Cornell High School, told his assistant that he was not feeling well during the second quarter of the game against Rochester and sat down on the bench. Seconds later, his condition worsened, and he lay down on the turf.
Coach’s Condition Deteriorates Rapidly
According to Cornell athletic director Bill Sacco, the situation escalated quickly. “Next thing you know, he wasn’t moving,” Sacco said, as reported by TribLive. An EMT on the scene attempted CPR, and Dawson was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Game Called, School in Mourning
The game was called after Dawson was transported off the field, with Cornell leading 16-6. The school’s superintendent, Dr. Aaron Thomas, released a statement expressing deep sorrow over the loss. “This is an extremely difficult situation,” Thomas said. “To say Coach Dawson was an integral part of Cornell School District would be an understatement.” He added that the school is “heartbroken” and “crushed” by the tragedy.
Community and Colleagues Remember Coach
Many colleagues and community members have spoken out about Dawson’s impact. Donnie Militzer, coach at Our Lady of Sacred Heart, described Dawson as a “welcoming guy … with a big personality,” and said his death “just crushed me.” Fort Cherry coach Tanner Garry called Dawson a “mentor,” highlighting his leadership and character on and off the field.
Coach’s Legacy and Career
Dawson took over as Cornell’s head coach in 2011 and had previously served as an assistant coach for both Cornell and the Quaker Valley team. The team entered the game with a record of 3-5 overall and 1-4 in the Big 7 Conference, hoping to secure a playoff berth.
Community Grief and Support
As the community mourns, they are coming together to support one another. “We have difficult days ahead, and we will lean on each other to get through them the best we can,” Thomas said, adding, “We love you, Coach Dawson.” The loss of such a dedicated coach has left a lasting impact on the school and the broader community.
