Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie warned on Sunday during an interview with ABC’s “This Week” that President Donald Trump has created a ‘rotten moral core’ within the Republican Party. Christie’s comments came in response to a recent ad that he described as ‘horrible’ and ‘one that should never have been run.’ However, he emphasized that the issue runs deeper than the ad itself, pointing to a broader problem within the party.
Trump’s Influence on GOP Morality
Christie stated, ‘This goes to the rotten moral core that Donald Trump has created for my party. And you then take the two, probably two of the most prominent Trump wannabes in our party, JD Vance and Vivek Ramaswamy, and what they’re showing America is, we want to be just as morally bankrupt as Trump, but we don’t have any of the charm or charisma that people might like.’ He continued, ‘This is the future of our party if we don’t get our act together, is to have charmless people with no charisma and the lack of moral clarity and center that Donald Trump has.’
Warning of a ‘Charmless’ Future
Christie added that the recent ad, which featured JD Vance and Vivek Ramaswamy, serves as a ‘cautionary tale for the future of our party.’ He argued that the ad reveals more about the two candidates than any other event in the current election. Christie expressed concern that if Ramaswamy wins in Ohio, the same type of morally bankrupt behavior could dominate the party in 2028. Conversely, if Ramaswamy loses, it could serve as a ‘real wake-up call’ for the type of conduct that has become prevalent within the GOP.
Call for Party Unity
Christie’s remarks highlight his growing frustration with the direction of the Republican Party under Trump’s leadership. He is urging party members to address the moral and ethical decline he perceives as a threat to the party’s future. Christie’s comments come amid a broader debate within the GOP about the impact of Trump’s influence on the party’s values and its ability to appeal to a broader electorate.
