A staffer for Michigan Democrat Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed was caught on undercover video dismissing concerns about the Muslim Brotherhood, calling Americans ‘idiots’ and suggesting he might support some of the organization’s activities if better informed.

Staffer’s Comments Spark Controversy

T.J. Wolfgram, El-Sayed’s independent and conservative outreach captain, made the remarks during a conversation with an undercover operative on October 15, according to video obtained by the Midwesterner. Discussing scrutiny of El-Sayed’s family connections to the Muslim Brotherhood, Wolfgram described the controversy as ‘so ridiculous’ before offering his assessment of American voters.

‘It’s because Americans are idiots,’ Wolfgram said. In another portion of the recording, Wolfgram described Hasan Piker, a political streamer, as a ‘pricky progressive’ rather than an Islamic extremist, while acknowledging that El-Sayed has ‘problematic professional and personal relations.’

Support for Muslim Brotherhood Amid Scrutiny

Wolfgram also suggested that an El-Sayed victory could embolden controversial figures in Muslim communities, but questioned what they would actually do with that influence. ‘Is it going to embolden problematic leaders in some Muslim community? Yes,’ Wolfgram said. ‘Is it going to be tenfold or one fold? Probably one fold. And what the f*ck are they going to do anyways?’

Wolfgram’s comments come after weeks of controversy over El-Sayed’s relationship with the Muslim Brotherhood, including the 2012 letter he signed supporting Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi, whose government was backed by the Muslim Brotherhood. The statement called for the ‘purging of the media and the police.’ El-Sayed declined to answer questions about the letter following a recent Senate debate when asked by the Midwesterner.

Self-Determination and Criticism of Women’s Treatment

Wolfgram went further when the undercover operative suggested that El-Sayed’s Muslim faith and opposition to colonialism made support for revolutionary movements understandable. ‘Absolutely. Yeah, I don’t have any issue with the Muslim Brotherhood, and if I knew more about it, it might support some of what they do,’ Wolfgram said.

He acknowledged that he might disagree with the group’s treatment of women but argued that other countries should be allowed to make their own decisions about how to govern themselves. ‘We must understand that self-determination includes judgment calls that we don’t agree with,’ Wolfgram said. ‘They may choose to treat women in ways that we don’t agree with.’

He then said people who have an issue with such practices should send money to nongovernmental organizations working to combat them — or to ‘a f*cking paramilitary organization.’ ‘The collective choice we make as a government should not be, as a default, to try and tell other people how to live,’ Wolfgram said.
