Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick (R) has expressed confidence that Republicans will soon overtake Democrats in early voting as the midterm elections approach, according to an interview with CBS News Texas. Patrick, whose opponent in the race is state Rep. Vikki Goodwin (D), emphasized the importance of mobilizing high-propensity voters to shift the early voting landscape in favor of his party.
Early Voting Momentum Grows
Patrick noted that while Democrats currently hold an early voting lead, the GOP has a significant untapped base of 600,000 potential voters. He urged Republicans to take action, stating that the party could potentially overtake Democrats by midweek and secure a healthy lead in early voting.
“The message to voters who are undecided, or even to some Democrats, is that this is not the Democrat Party of old,” Patrick said. He outlined the key differences between the two parties, emphasizing Republican values such as low taxes, pro-business policies, and support for law enforcement and secure borders.
Early Voting Trends Across Key States
A recent Associated Press analysis highlighted a surge in early voting across several states, including Texas, where early voting has increased by 74% compared to 2022. Other states like Kansas, Maine, North Carolina, and Ohio have also seen substantial increases in early in-person and mail voting.
Patrick’s comments align with broader Republican optimism about the midterm elections. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) recently expressed confidence in Republican candidates, despite polls suggesting a Democratic advantage. Johnson claimed that the polling data does not reflect the energy he is seeing on the ground, describing the atmosphere as similar to the 2024 presidential race.
Political Strategy and Messaging
Patrick’s strategy underscores the importance of early voting as a critical factor in determining the outcome of the midterms. He framed the race as a battle over core values and policies, positioning the Republican Party as the defender of traditional Texas values and a strong advocate for economic growth and security.
As the race intensifies, the focus on early voting is expected to remain a central theme for both parties, with each vying to secure the largest share of the early ballot count in key battleground states.
