As the midterm elections approach, the Department of Justice (DOJ) has announced a significant increase in its election monitoring efforts across the United States. This move is intended to ensure the integrity of the voting process, with the DOJ deploying around 1,000 monitors to various counties. The department emphasized that these monitors will observe for potential violations of federal law and report their findings for review after Election Day. The DOJ spokesperson stated that all monitors must adhere to strict legal and ethical guidelines to ensure they do not interfere with the voting process.
Democrats Respond With Volunteer Army
In response to the DOJ’s efforts, Democratic state parties and coalition groups are mobilizing their own volunteer forces. An estimated 10,000 volunteers are being trained to observe polling places and report any concerning activities they witness. This initiative is part of a broader effort to counter potential threats to election integrity, according to the Associated Press.
Common Cause, a grassroots coalition group, has trained approximately 16,000 volunteers to serve as voting sentinels at precincts. Suzanne Almeida, the group’s vice president, told the AP that their goal is to ensure that any threats to election day operations are addressed. A larger Election Protection coalition, involving 300 other groups, has also trained tens of thousands of volunteers to prepare for the possibility of “Election Day confusion.” Almeida emphasized that the collective effort is essential if the most significant threats to election integrity are to be mitigated.
The Republican National Committee (RNC) has also trained 22,000 volunteers to monitor polling places, according to the AP. This indicates that both major political parties are taking proactive steps to safeguard the election process, with each side preparing for potential challenges and ensuring their respective voters’ concerns are addressed.
