Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) recently posted a video of a lakeside stroll with her husband, Tim Mynett, which includes a Somali rap song with violent lyrics. The 27-second clip, shared on X days after a federal raid on her Washington, D.C., home, shows the congresswoman walking along a Minnesota lake with the caption, “Less scrolling, more strolling. Enjoying our beautiful Minnesota lakes.”
Violent Lyrics in the Background Music
The song, “Nimaan Ciilayba Icaaya” by Somali rapper Ilkacase Qays, features verses that warn of punishment, humiliation, and subjugation for enemies. An English translation commissioned by the Washington Free Beacon reveals lines such as, “The Almighty has given me strength. If I confront you in the afternoon, by evening, I will teach you a lesson.” Another verse boasts of throwing people into a well and imposing taxes on enemies, with the song closing with a vow to dominate and shame them.
Omar Faces Federal Investigation
The video comes as Omar faces a federal criminal investigation into her immigration history and financial disclosures. Homeland Security Investigations agents raided her Washington home on October 12, seizing her phone, passport, computers, and notebooks. The Justice Department is reviewing her financial disclosures, which include an accounting error that reduced her reported 2024 net worth from $30 million to $65,000.
Omar has denied any wrongdoing and called the investigation a politically motivated smear campaign. “For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns. This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation,” she stated in a recent post.
Background on the Song and Its Context
The song, which appears to be a jab at former President Donald Trump, was mentioned by Trump as a potential factor in the probes that could lead to Omar’s deportation or arrest. The Justice Department lists Omar as “Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, a/k/a Ilhan Abdullahi Omar,” without explanation, while she insists her name has always been Ilhan Omar.
