A 32-year-old woman was arrested in New York City after allegedly attacking a rabbi and another Jewish man with a syringe, according to prosecutors. Anna Mochalova is facing charges that include assault as a hate crime. The incidents occurred in Midtown Manhattan, where she allegedly stabbed a young rabbi, Yosef, in the back with a needle near West 47th Street and Fifth Avenue on Wednesday at 5:50 p.m.
Targeted Attack on Rabbi
According to prosecutors, Mochalova began stalking Yosef, a 26-year-old rabbi wearing traditional Orthodox garb, before attacking him. Yosef told The New York Post he believed he was targeted because he is “visibly Jewish.”
Second Incident Involves Threatening a Jewish Man
Minutes after the attack on the rabbi, Mochalova is alleged to have deliberately bumped into a 37-year-old Jewish man wearing a yarmulke. Prosecutors claim she bumped into him several times, causing a stinging sensation in his right arm, and then chillingly told him, “run away from here. I have a gun. I’m going to shoot you.” The man was later treated for lacerations.
Hate Crimes Rise in NYC
Prosecutors also noted that a third potential victim, a Muslim man, was not harmed. Despite radical leftist Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s claims of “historic lows” for murders and shootings, hate crimes in the city have risen by nearly 13%. Jewish New Yorkers, who make up only 10% of the city’s population, account for more than half of the confirmed hate crimes.
Context of Rising Antisemitism
NYPD reports indicate that antisemitism is a growing concern in the city. The situation has led to heightened awareness and calls for action. While the exact motivations behind Mochalova’s actions remain under investigation, the incidents underscore the ongoing challenges of hate crimes in New York City.
